Welcome to our first issue of Connected in 2023

We have several stories and updates to share, so please take a few minutes to catch up with what’s been going on at Cornerstone and within the telecoms industry.

Firstly, I’d like to announce that our new CEO, Pat Coxen, joined Cornerstone in January. We are delighted to welcome Pat to our business and introduce him to you. This is an exciting time for Cornerstone, and we look forward to our business taking on a new direction.

Over the past couple of years, we have kept you updated with the Speed up Britain lobbying campaign that we supported to help deploy, upgrade and share our mobile networks more quickly and easily.

Since the revision of the Code legislation in 2017, the industry recognised that the Code needed a further review. Therefore, the campaign was developed to call on the government to attend to further improving and updating the legislation. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) opened a Code consultation in 2021. After carefully considering the consultation response, the Product Security & Telecommunications Infrastructure (PTSI) was drafted. A Bill is a proposed law introduced into Parliament. The PTSI Bill was debated and approved by each House of Parliament and received Royal Assent in December when it became law.

We look forward to working with the industry and our landlords to implement these changes and enable our communities to further benefit from mobile services. We believe the updated Code will positively impact our working relationship and help build stronger connections.

As a result of the changes in the Code, OFCOM has put forward a consultation to review its current Code of Practice. They developed this a few years ago to guide how the Operators’ and Site providers’ communities should work with each other. Over the years, we have evolved and given the recent PTSI Bill, OFCOM and DCMS have recognised that it requires a review and revision. Cornerstone is involved in the consultation, working with the industry to ensure that the Code of Practice is fit for purpose and ensuring we all use it as guidance for best practices. Once this consultation is complete, it will be made public, and we encourage all our landlords to review the changes. This process will give us all assurance on how we should work together. We will keep you updated on the progress.

Towards the end of last year, the National Connectivity Alliance (NCA) was launched to help collaboration across the different organisations within the Operators and Site provider communities. Cornerstone is a member of the steering group for the NCA. We are playing our part to ensure that our landlords can experience a smooth interaction with us for their site acquisition, renewal or maintenance. The NCA includes members from diverse organisations and professionals, including Mobile Network Operators, Infrastructure Providers, Legal firms, Trade bodies, Member organisations, Real Estate agents and Local authorities.
