The benefits of 5G

MobileUK – the trade association for the UK’s mobile network operators, recently launched their mini pack series that showcases the societal benefits of 5G. We wanted to share some of these benefits with you to show how placing mobile infrastructure on your sites makes a difference to society.

How will 5G help healthcare?

  • Better access to health services. 5G technology will provide more opportunity to speak directly to healthcare professionals, and create new ways to be treated by them.
  • Better information to understand our health. 5G technology will mean more data is collected to make earlier diagnoses of health problems.

How could 5G increase rural opportunities?

  • Future-proofing the rural economy. All rural firms - from the farm to the manufacturer - could have new tools to help them boost their business. 5G enabled remote working could help rural residents to access better jobs and training. Tourism could also be enhanced by new methods of engaging visitors.
  • Improved digital connectivity. 5G offers the possibility of reaching areas where fixed digital connectivity cannot. In other words, where difficult terrain prevents or severely hinders the laying of fixed digital wires, 5G could be part of a viable solution, alongside existing technologies.

How will 5G help the environment?

  • Reducing emissions. Data and information from 5G digital connections will calibrate cars, vans and lorries to minimise the CO2 that they emit. The same type of data and information will manage the usage of appliances and devices in our homes, reducing the power that they consume. In short, 5G will automate a decrease in the emissions we create during our daily lives.
  • Identifying environmental problems early. 5G technology can measure and monitor the environment much more quickly and easily than humans and existing technology can. 5G will mean that action can be taken sooner to prevent or address environmental harm and damage.

How will 5G support the emergency services?

  • Paramedics will be able to send vital signs and 360° images, alongside high-resolution video calls between ambulance and hospital staff in real time, thanks to the ultra-low latency of 5G networks.
  • 5G connectivity will enable the use of augmented reality (AR), via equipped glasses, to enable emergency services to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to guide them through critical procedures at an emergency scene or en-route to hospital.

To experience these benefits, it’s important to recognise that we need to continuously deploy mobile infrastructure throughout the UK with your support, to make it possible. Working collaboratively with you will help us to enable the next generation of mobile technology for our society.
